Gateway for Venice

Quote from John Winter

"Venice is the only major city not open to wheeled transport, visitors must leave their cars or buses at the Piazzale Roma and proceed by foot or boat.
An international architectural competition was held to create a revitalised urban space worthy of Venice, with a new bus terminal, cafe, police offices and jetties for waterbuses. Weston Williamson's solution is based on a strong circular geometry, with its focus as the centre of Piazzale Roma. The circular plan would work extremely well in terms of circulation.   The arrival point has a great glass fountain at its centre and a shady park of trees and sculpture. The bridge has dramatic views of the Grand Canal and a sense of arriving at a very special city. Sophisticated yet playful, this scheme would give Venice an entrance worthy of the city."
