We design for the people who use, move through or inhabit our buildings. We craft spaces that are a pleasure to use and enrich life.

Approach

People are at the heart of all we do

Our work is about the people who use it, who move through or inhabit it. We want it to delight or reassure, buildings and spaces that are a pleasure to use and enrich life.

We are instinctive collaborators, we like to stay and talk, to listen and understand. The complex nature of the projects that form the core of our work means we always work closely with clients, consultants and colleagues to deliver successful projects. We understand what other people need, where it is necessary for us to lead and where to support. Our approach to collaboration has generated productive and long-standing working relationships that have lasted for 25 years and continue to this day.

We have a clarity of approach

We get to the essence of what is required, respond to it with straightforward elegance and present bold solutions as self-evident. Our interest in rational clarity allows us to set out a clear and engaging vision, intelligibly structure space, and informs our approach to materials and detailing. We design refined, sustainable solutions with an economy of means that fulfil the requirement for a building to work well and create spaces responsive to human life.

We work back and forth from the general to the specific. Understanding one informs the other. We have the confidence and experience to know we can make something work. We provide the right response to the question being asked, not a pre-conceived idea. We work happily outside the style debate that transforms architecture into fashion, making our design responses free and diverse, but simple in spirit.

We are designers

We are interested in the way buildings are made and put together, how things connect, support, touch, enclose. We care about the details and value simplicity, what is essential, and an intelligent use of resources. Our designs often have to last 60 or 120 years. It makes us think differently, how they will look good over their whole life, and how they might adapt, adding value through good design.

We are inventive

We are fascinated by the technology of our time; not just high tech, but also low tech, transferred from other industries, the appropriate technology to respond to a particular issue. We care about the interfaces between this, nature and people. We look for a better way of making components and systems perform and collaborate with the wider industry to make this happen. We are constantly looking at new ways of working or tools for working with, or refining existing ones to help us work better. We are technically inventive and provocative without shouting about it.
