WW+P started work on Paddington in 2007, supporting Mott MacDonald, on a three week option study for London Underground. Through excellent client leadership, LU, NR, Crossrail and TfL Group Property came together as a single client body to allow the design team to develop a truly integrated design and construction solution.
Early commissions were sometimes led by Mott MacDonald, sometimes by WW+P but always with the same team ethic.
The collocated team included all four client organisations, all design disciplines and construction planning from Taylor Woodrow and Metronet. Crossrail took on the delivery of the project, with Carillion as main contractor. Close working with Westminster City Council and English Heritage on the design and approvals was of huge benefit. The passenger experience and design quality is hopefully a taste of what is to come when the main Crossrail Station at Paddington opens.
The project is a major example of how a skilled architectural and engineering team can overcome challenges to deliver a significant work of architectural infrastructure. This is a showcase for British design in the service of the public
