Arcology Skyscraper

Arcology Skyscraper

Location:Hong Kong
Services:Competition

The Arcology Skyscraper competition posed an exciting question: how to create a self-sufficient vertical neighbourhood in the heart of Hong Kong. Our answer was to design a high-rise, high density building for modern city dwellers, providing spaces for work, rest and play under one roof and creating a dynamic new community.

Sustainable urban living

Arcology is the fusion of architecture and ecology - to create densely populated, environmentally low impact spaces. The brief demanded a self-sufficient building offering a sustainable solution to urban development.

A thriving vertical neighbourhood

Our tower combines residential, commercial, social and agricultural functions on one site, rising from the banks of Victoria Harbour. Its shape marries the distinctly urban setting with the dramatic mountainous backdrop. The tower maximises the development value of the site without compromising on quality.

Extending to 440m at its highest, the tapering form expands and contracts creating a series of floorplates that adapt to a wide range of functions. These floorplates have added environmental benefits too, maximising the opportunity for passive lighting, heating and ventilation systems.

The tower’s receding base allows for greater integration with the surrounding area as well as providing space for shops. On the intermediate levels there are agricultural terraces orientated to provide favourable growing conditions. And the residential apartments are located on the upper levels to make the most of the natural daylight and magnificent panoramic views.

A series of public nodes incorporating retail, recreational and social spaces are interspersed throughout the building, to encourage a thriving and dynamic community to establish.
