Barcelona Airport Terminal 1 Satellite

Barcelona Airport is one of the fastest growing hubs in Europe, to sustain this growth, a masterplan was developed including a new satellite connected to Terminal 1 via APM and road connections. The satellite will provide 13 new contact stands for a mix of MARS and Code E aircrafts together with 4 remote MARS stands, and a new gateway to Spain’s and the city of Barcelona.

Rigorous Analysis

The Airport required an iconic building that delivers a memorable and uplifting experience for passengers, while meeting the complex functional requirements. Through rigorous analysis of these requirements, we developed a simple layout, which optimised the Airport’s efficiency in terms of aircraft, passenger and baggage movements.

We created a single departures lounge area with biometric passport and boarding card readers at each gate. This enabled Schengen and Non-Schengen passengers to mix in a common-user gate lounge, providing full retail exposure to optimise commercial revenue potential. Having one shared departure level instead of two levels significantly reduced the built floor area and vertical circulation making this a cost-effective solution.

Innovative terminal design

Our design is highly flexible and adaptable allowing for changes in technology and supporting long-term growth and investment. As a gateway airport our vision creates an iconic, timeless building, with elegant long span roof beams inspired by Gaudi, creating uninterrupted areas of floor space. A fully glazed façade provides views over the airfield, creating a spectacular departures space.

At the heart of our design was a vibrant public plaza with a mix of shops, food and beverage outlets and a VIP lounge. For arriving passengers, a generous double-height space, filled with daylight and views across the airfield appropriately reflects the drama of air travel.

Sustainable design

We developed a range of innovative solutions to reduce energy and water consumption in the building’s operations. We designed the building to avoid the need for artificial lighting of public areas in daylight hours. Passive measures were also used to reduce solar heat gain, and renewable energy sources were incorporated. Our design was evaluated to a BREEAM Excellent accreditation.
