Integrating complex infrastructure
The Elizabeth Line depot’s proximity to the north of the proposed HS2 railway station presents a constraint to the development of the area, and achieving the aims of the Old Oak Common redevelopment vision. Any development plans need to consider the integration of differing site levels between the depot and the HS2 station, as well as potential impact on HS2 station components, such as bus and taxi interchange, and access roads.
Facilitating development through over site development
We considered a range of future options for the depot facility, including partial and wholesale relocation. We also looked at a number of scenarios for reconfiguration and decking over the depot facility and rail lines to allow for development above. Decking options had to carefully consider how to retain the railway and maintenance operations, while presenting a development that could offer return on the considerable investment of over infrastructure development.
Through our comprehensive technical study we identified potential solutions that successfully integrate the current Old Oak Common station designs into a decked depot.
