Meeting user needs
There is a distinct challenge when designing a building in such a dramatic landscape; the building must be modern and functional to meets the needs of its users as well as sympathetic to its surroundings. For this stunning site in the heart of the Lake District on the south shore of Ullswater we wanted to produce an elegantly detailed building with simple appropriate materials.
Lakeland boathouse re-born
We reinterpreted the iconic form of the Lakeland boathouse, building on local historic examples while still providing the functional requirements of the clubhouse. We took key elements of a boathouse, the pitched roof for example, and abstracted and reoriented them so they remained familiar yet modern.
The choice of materials was particularly important given the setting. We chose finishes and materials that would age well over time ensuring the building becomes one with the landscape. Untreated cedar on the main body of the clubhouse will weather to grey, softening the form.
