Tackling regional decline
Villeneuve Airport is run by Sturgeon County who are faced with an increasing decline in the area’s oil and gas industry leading to a lack of local investment and jobs. Using the Airport as a focus for a new innovation excellence business park, the Airport Area Masterplan aims to create new jobs in the region and attract inward investment.
The Masterplan is key to supporting the Federal Government’s commitments to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Leveraging existing transportation links to the Airport including air, rail, and road to develop a fully accessible business park, allowance was also made to integrate future transport modes, safeguarding key areas of land.
Adaptive design framework
We developed a flexible framework of design principles to deliver a creative campus and work environment conducive to cross-industry communication. The masterplan divides the area into four industry zones and commercial area: Aviation Innovation Alliance, Eco Park, Agri-innovation Hub and Logistics Park, all placed within walkable public space.
At the heart of the development is a business forum and public plaza providing un-programmed space for temporary expo buildings and pop-up retail. A network of green corridors, cycle and pedestrian routes connect the four industrial zones and contribute to a high-quality built environment that is efficient, safe, and environmentally sustainable.
